The Story Begins......
When I was 26 years old, I was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease. This affects the lining of your intestine and gut. No more Gluten. No more Wheat. No more Bread. No more Cake. No more BEER….
At the ripe ‘old’ age of 37, the diagnoses increase to include allergies to Dairy, Peanuts, Soy and Sulphur Dioxide – on top of my Coeliacs. I also have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (Lucky) so this now gives me a huge list of foods that I need to avoid.
These two handsome fellows are Lenny and Felix. They are my beautiful nephews. Unfortunately, these cuties also have multiple allergies (and different to each other) so looking after them for the weekend is a military affair, with a list of items they can eat and a bigger list of things they need to be kept away from. Do you know how hard it is to keep a small child away from the communal bowl of crisps?
What was it that made it so hard?? Having multiple allergies meant that there was a HUGE list of ‘hidden’ ingredients (different name for the same thing I guess is the best way to describe it), and some names that are unpronounceable, that we now had to remember. Reading the back of the packets of those fantastic looking gluten free biscuits – is a nightmare.
"What does this mean?" "What the heck is that?" "FFS – They say GF, does that mean that I can eat them???"
I also had to educate my husband, and we agreed that it would be so much easier if we had an app where we could walk into any supermarket, scan the barcode of an item that you want to eat, and the app could tell you if it is safe for you to consume or not – doesn’t that sound like heaven (it does to my hubby and I, my nephews parents, and the grandparents who want to spoil the boys, but don’t want to accidentally hurt them).
And the story begins……
