Searching for My Sanity

My Aunty had an operation recently, that had her laid up for quite some time. She has a house of 5 adults and 2 wee kiddies. My sister-in-law (AKA wifey) and I decided that the best thing we could do for this household and aunty, is to cook them some meals to pop in the freezer.

Sounds easy enough right?

We thought so too. Although my aunty is GF. You would think an old hand like me would find this easy?? Due to the fact that I have multiple allergies, my mind is set on what I cannot have, trying to get my head around someone else’s allergies…..

Wifey and I thought we would plan out what we needed to get from the supermarket in order to create these meals. We used a New Zealand supermarket website for this, as they have the ingredients for quite a few products listed on their site. We were looking for something as basic as stock, and I told wifey that we needed to check the ingredients of the stock (based on experience, most stocks have gluten in them), and found that we couldn’t locate the ingredients for some of the items. Any ready meals (cook in the pot, or instant sachets) also needed to be checked for suitability.

We turned to the app – it has a search function!

We changed the allergy settings (removed my own and added my auntie’s) and entered the product we were looking for…. BOOM…. there it was – unable for Aunty to eat. Keep checking. Wifey was impressed, she didn’t know that you could do this with the app.

Being able to search before either going to the supermarket or ordering online meant that we were not wasting money AND the time in the supermarket was dramatically shortened (thank goodness) as we knew what brand we were looking for.

Cooking for someone with allergies? – alter the allergies in the app to suit theirs before you go shopping, you can change these at any time.

“The secret of good cooking is, first, having a love of it…. If you’re are convinced that cooking is drudgery, you’re never going to be good at it, and you may as well warm up something frozen” – James Beard
